Navigating Reaching Teens as a Group

Designed to equip youth-serving groups and organizatons with accessible, strength-based communication strategies.

(See Navigating Reaching Teens as an Individual Learner to understand different strategies to approach this large body of work).

  • Reaching Teens offers a multitude of group professional development opportunities.
  • Groups can determine which topics are most relevant to them and determine the order in which they should be addressed.
  • The best learning can happen in groups where you can support each other, give honest, safe feedback, and adapt the lessons so they are applied to your setting. Therefore, each chapter has suggested group learning and discussion activities.
  • All learners should read the written chapter prior to the group’s session. The chapters are written to be easily and quickly digestible.
  • You may consider dividing the associated films between practice or program members prior to the session so that members of the group come with varied expertise to add to the discussion. You’ll find that in many chapters there are more films than you are likely to use as groups or individuals. In fact, there is intentional redundancy to allow your setting to pick a viewpoint/style that best would meet the needs of the youth you serve.
  • You may also consider assigning a topic “champion” to view all of the films prior to the professional development session. The champion can choose which film (or segment of a film) can start the discussion.
